They say laughter is the best medicine…
At times it might not feel like there’s much to feel happy about – but a simple smile can lift a person’s day. What’s more, it’s been proven to have beneficial health effects like reducing depression and lowering blood pressure. Yes, really!
In an article published on mental wellbeing site Psychology Today, it was revealed that smiling activates the release of little things called neuropeptides, which work toward fighting off stress. Neuropeptides aren’t as complicated as they sound: they basically fire up things like our endorphins, which are the feel-good hormones which make us feel happy. This is turn makes us feel more relaxed, which in turn lowers our stress levels and blood pressure…. which is all-round better for our hearts, circulation and a whole host of other health benefits.
The power of a smile doesn’t stop there. Smiling even makes us better-looking! According to two studies, when we smile we are viewed by others as more attractive, reliable and sincere. All of which are important traits for that perfect partner… so if you’re on the look-out for someone, start smiling more! At the very least, receiving an unexpected smile in the street or supermarket can make someone’s day – and it will make you feel pretty good as well.
