Marmalade Companions is a time-limited 1:1 project operating across Bristol, North Somerset and South Glos. Friendly volunteers make a weekly call to those involved to discuss their interests and needs. These conversations will lead to signposting to local social activities and community support, to improve social connections. The project enables people to make meaningful, long-lasting connections that bring them joy far beyond the program.

Michael's story

For Michael, 74, being part of the Marmalade Companions project has been an uplifting experience. "The project has been wonderful for me," he says. One of the highlights for Michal was being paired with a companion who shared many of his interests, including a love for music. "My companion is a musician, so it was easy to talk about things we have in common."

Their connection grew over time, with his companion even calling him from a recent trip to Kenya. "The last few days he was on safari, and for our last conversation together, we spoke about that." Michael appreciated how they could share life experiences, particularly as both had lost their spouses. "He lost his wife a few years ago, so we have had a similar experience here."

What stood out most for Michael was the positive, solution-focused nature of their conversations. "He never dwells upon any problems, and this is important to me because we can then concentrate on social connections. He is an excellent listener and very professional."

For Michael, the weekly calls provided more than just conversation—they were a source of comfort. "I found it very comforting to know he was phoning me up. I felt comfortable at all times. It has been good. I've got a sense that someone cares to contact me, and this is uplifting."

Through the project, Michael was also connected to a monthly grieving group at a local parish church. "We meet once a month. It’s free with a cup of tea and a piece of cake. I’ve got to know a lady and a gentleman there, and we’ve swapped emails. I’m going along for the church service occasionally too."

The Marmalade Companions project has not only provided Michael with friendship and support, but it has also helped him build new connections in his community, bringing a sense of comfort and belonging back into his life.

How we help in our area

As well as our national and international campaigns which raise awareness of loneliness, Marmalade Trust runs projects which support those most at risk from experiencing loneliness in our region.

Our most long-running project is our annual Christmas Cheer lunch in the Bristol, South Glos. and the North Somerset area for our ‘Marmalade members’, older and vulnerable people who would otherwise be by themselves on Christmas Day.

We also run our Marmalade Companions project. Trained volunteers empower and support older people to new activities, social connections and friendships in their local community.

The wonderful photos in this story were taken as part of the HEINEKEN UK Star Turns Orange fundraising event. Alongside members and volunteers, we had a chance to celebrate connection and the work we do at Marmalade Trust.
