4 ways to feel less lonely in September

Hi friends! Meg from Marmalade Trust here. To me, September feels like a month of new beginnings, a time to buy new stationary and find new routines to get us through the colder months. It's also a good time to think about how we can continue building meaningful relationships.

Making friends and new connections can be hard work, especially when we're feeling lonely. As part of our monthly series, we’ve put our heads together to find some opportunities and ways to feel less lonely and build meaningful connections in September. As always, comment below or drop us a line on social media to share your connection ideas.

Get involved in Heritage Open Days

As the summer holidays come to an end, it can sometimes feel like the fun is over. But September has its own share of exciting opportunities for connection, especially with Heritage Open Days! These events are all about celebrating England's rich history and culture, with thousands of places and events open to the public for free.

Why not use this as a chance to connect with someone you’ve been meaning to get to know better? Invite them to join you for a visit to a local historical site or event. It’s a great way to spend time together without the pressure of one-on-one conversation, as you can share your thoughts on the sites you visit.

📍 Heritage Open Days

Taking place from 6-15 September, Heritage Open Days offer a range of events across England, from hidden historical gems to special tours and exhibitions. Whether you’re into architecture, nature, history, or the arts, there’s something for everyone, and it’s a wonderful way to connect with others who share your interests.

Join a book club for cosy autumn reads

September is the perfect time to dig out your blankets and curl up with a good book. If you’re looking for a way to meet new people and have meaningful discussions, why not join a local book club? Many libraries, community centres or book shops host book clubs that you can join, and some even offer specialised groups focusing on specific genres or themes.

Reading a book together provides an easy icebreaker, and discussions often go beyond the pages, leading to deeper conversations and connections. Plus, it’s a great way to continue socialising as the days get shorter and the evenings longer.

Personally, I have found local book clubs by asking friends if they know of one or searching on Facebook.

Take a foraging walk

September is the start of autumn, and nature is bursting with berries, nuts, and other wild edibles. A foraging walk is not only a fun and mindful way to connect with nature, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people. Many local foraging groups and guides offer organised walks where you can learn about edible plants and their uses.

These walks are perfect for engaging with others, sharing recipes, and even swapping what you’ve foraged. If you’re in Wales, for example, you might find a foraging walk along the stunning coastlines or in one of the many beautiful national parks. Have a look at Totally Wild for a course near you. Remember to always forage responsibly and sustainably!

Take part in the Great British Beach Clean

September is also a time to give back to the community, and what better way to do that than by participating in the Great British Beach Clean? This event brings people together to clean up the UK’s beaches, helping to protect wildlife and keep our coastlines beautiful. It’s a fantastic way to meet others who care about the environment and make a tangible difference.

Working together towards a common goal can be a great bonding experience, and you might just make a new friend along the way. The Great British Beach Clean runs from Friday 20th - Sunday 29th September 2024, and there are events happening all across the UK, from Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands.

As we move into the beginning of autumn, it’s important to remember that loneliness is just one feeling among many. Rather than trying to “cure” it, let’s focus on creating opportunities for connection. Whether it’s exploring local history, discussing your favourite books, discovering wild foods, or helping to clean up our beautiful beaches, there are so many ways to build bridges and forge new relationships.

So, let’s embrace this new season and all the opportunities it brings to connect with others. Let me know how you get on!
