Alice's story

Alice, 33, began volunteering for Marmalade Trust with a desire to help someone struggling with loneliness reconnect with the world. Through our Companions project, she was paired with Zakiyy, a Marmalade member experiencing long-term loneliness.

We recognise that loneliness is a subjective experience, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach that will prevent everyone from feeling lonely. By matching a trained volunteer with each member, we can ensure that each individual receives a tailored response that connects them with the kinds of services and support they think would help them.

By building a trusting relationship through regular phone contact, companions offer help and support to build the member's confidence, form new social links and access services needed. Signposting to new activities or ways of making social connections inside or outside the home, is a key part of the volunteer role.

"I volunteered for Marmalade Trust as I wanted to help someone who was feeling lonely to reconnect with the world and once again feel a sense of belonging that they may have been missing. I have felt pure joy in helping Zakiyy feel less alone, through the brilliant Companions project and meeting in person at Marmalade events such as the Summer Party.

Alice and Zakiyy

Alice shared, "In the process, I have made a friend for life!"

Alice also shared how much the companionship meant to her personally: "I live alone, so as well as supporting Zakiyy with company, it’s been lovely for me to have that connection as well. She has such positive energy, and I always feel better after speaking with her. I get a lot from it."

For Zakiyy, attending the Summer Party was a significant milestone: "The summer party was the first time I've been out of my home, apart from hospital visits, in seven years."

Alice’s story highlights the profound impact of intergenerational friendship. While Zakiyy gained the courage to reengage with the world, Alice found a meaningful connection. Friendships that span across generations are valuable as they allow people to learn from one another’s experiences, offer different perspectives, and create bonds that help combat loneliness for both parties.

Alice found joy not only in supporting Zakiyy but also in forming a friendship that has enriched her own life.
